The most widespread of Australia's eight Hemicordulia species, H.tau is named to the 'tau-shaped' mark on its frons. This feature is shared with H.flava, the Desert Emerald, but H.tau has the seventh abdominal segment almost totally black above.

This large, powerful dragonfly can be seen almost anywhere in Australia, as adults can wander far from permanent water. The large size and brown and yellow mottled colouration and pale yellow-green eyes makes it easy to recognise.
