The diagonally inserted 2-lobed leaves are a key diagnostic feature. In winter, the very large perianths also become a conspicuous feature.

Key features of this species are its longitudinally-inserted leaves which often have a moon-shaped sinus (indentation) between the two lobes on each leaf. Perianths are a good feature to look for as well - C. lunulifolia has untoothed female bracts.
Only two other Cephalozia species are known from Derbyshire - the bog-dwelling C.connivens and the common C.bicuspidata (see above), which has diagonally inserted leaves.

C. curvifolia can be recognised by its worm-like shoots and strongly concave leaves with two long pincer-like lobes. The long, thin stems can completely cover rotting logs in woodland in favoured sites. Another distinctive feature of the species is its crimson-red colour, although in deep shade red pigments can be completely absent. The first photo shows a more typically coloured patch of plants. The photo below looks rather yellow as a result of the camera flash - the colour is actually a rich green with red tinges.

O. denudatum is primarily a western, upland species, and is a very rare plant in the Peak District. It is only known from two sites in Derbyshire, and occurs in very small quantity at both.

This small liverwort is a bog specialist and is very rare in Derbyshire. It closely resembles Gymnocolea inflata, which can grow in the same habitat and is much more common - microscopical confirmation is necessary, when the stem flagellae and conspicuous underleaves of Odontoschisma are easily seen. The cells are also larger than in Gymnocolea.
Odontoschisma fluitans is only known from four 1km squares in the county - three on the Eastern Moors and one near Stanage Edge.

The scientific name comes from the tapered (attenuated) gemmae-bearing shoots.

Although variable in colour, from yellowish, to green to brownish, at least some stems in a colony will usually be seen to have red patches of gemmae at the the tips - a feature always absent from B.floerkii.

Along with B. attenuata, this is the commonest Barbilophozia/Orthocaulis in Derbyshire, and in England as a whole. It is found in acidic habitats, and is locally common in the Dark Peak on peaty rock ledges and rotting logs.

The easiest identification feature to see in the field is the way the young leaves at the tip of the shoots are pressed against each other, rather than spreading apart (as in other Barbilophozia species). The leaves are clearly 3-lobed, making confusion with other small leafy liverworts unlikely.

Microscopically, L. bicrenata is best identified by the thickened cell walls on the perianths. These are the most reliable character to distinguish it from L. excisa, which grows in similar habitats and the two species sometimes grow together. L. excisa has perianths with thin cell walls, purplish gemmae and smooth leaves. Most sites for L. excisa in Derbyshire are from soil ledges on limestone outcrops, unlike L. bicrenata.

In the field, this is an easy species to identify, as the stems always have dense clusters of dark brown gemmae at their tips. Microscopically, the gemmae are fairly rounded and contain large, persistent oil bodies. L. bicrenata could look fairly similar but is never found in calcareous sites and has thickened cell walls. L. excisa grows in mildly-calcareous sites but has different perianth mouths, is paroicous and the leaves are inserted diagonally, rather than horizontally on the stems. L. excisa also usually has only sparse gemmae (this is never the case in L. perssonii) which are purplish and contain small oil bodies.

It can be distinguished from the more common M. turbinata by its larger size and broad-based leaves, as well as the lack of underleaves.
Mesoptychia badensis (syn. Leiocolea badensis)
M. badensis is usually an easy species to identify. Like M. turbinata (below), it lacks underleaves and the two species are separated by how wide their leaf bases are. Typical badensis has very widely-inserted leaves, although some stems can appear to have more narrow leaf bases which resemble M. turbinata. The latter species has non-decurrent leaf bases.

The best distinguishing feature of this lime-loving species is the narrow leaf base - unusual among British liverworts. It is a very small species, more so than the other two, and is found on permanently wet limestone, such as seeping rock ledges and damp tufa.

Although mainly an upland species reaching its British south-eastern limit in the Peak District, it is not uncommon in the region and can be seen at many sites in the White Peak in calcareous grassland.

Like many small Jungermannia species, fertile plants need to be located to help with identification. J. pumila has a paroicous inflorescence (pairs of male bracts below a single pair of female ones) and lacks perigynia (sheaths surrounding the female inflorescence). In the Peak District, at least, these features are conclusive.
This primarily northern and western species is fairly widespread in the Peak District, which represents the south-eastern limit of its main range in Britain. A smaller, disjunct range exists in Kent and Sussex.

Solenostoma sphaerocarpa

Unlike its close cousin (which favours drier, disturbed habitats) it is a paroicous species, with male and female parts on the same stem. It also lacks the red-coloured perianth and strongly-bordered leaves of S. gracillimum, although a hand lens is essential for viewing these features.
Both species are more or less equally common in northern Derbyshire.

The classic diagnostic feature for this species is the margin of enlarged cells along the leaf borders, but these can be hard to see, given the tiny (less than 1mm) width of the leaves - a x20 hand lens is essential. Habitat also gives a good hint for identifying this species in the county.
The second photo shows the striking red perianths, which can be very abundant in some colonies.

S. hyalinum is one of three Derbyshire species that routinely have purple rhizoids on the stems - this is a useful character. Confirmation of its identify, though, requires examining perianths on fertile material. Sterile plants can be suspected but not confirmed. S. hyalinum is a dioicous species and the female stems bear perianths with long cells at the mouth and well-developed perigynia. Sometimes S. paroicum can be dioicous and strongly resemble S. hyalinum but it has larger cells.

A key morphological feature is the dioicous inflorescence, with male and female plants being separate. Other dioicous Jungermannias/Solenostomas in Derbyshire are J. atrovirens, S.gracillimum (see above) and S.hyalinum, but these avoid calcareous habitats, and so are unlikely to cause confusion in the limestone dales where J. atrovirens is common.

When viewed closely, the front leaf lobe extends well across and runs slightly down the stem. Where present, branches arise from the back of stem - a feature almost unique to this member of the genus. The most similar species, S. aequiloba, is not found in Derbyshire.

Along with S. undulata (above), this is by far the commonest Scapania in acidic upland areas of Derbyshire.

In the field, the most apparent feature of this small species is the abundant red gemmae. Microscopically, the leaves are seen to have very pointed lobes with sharply-toothed margins and the gemmae have very thin cell walls.

S. gracilis often has green gemmae present, and this, combined with its acidic woodland habitat, gives a good hint as to its identity. Microscopically, the leaves usually have teeth at their bases - an unusual feature among Scapanias. In woodland, S. nemorea and S. undulata can sometimes have this too, but they differ in leaf shape and/or gemmae colour and most of their leaves will lack the basal teeth.

Under a microscope, the leaves can be seen to have pointed apices with few or no teeth and a fairly weakly-curved keel. The smaller (antical) lobe is squarrose, giving the shoots a more three-dimensional appearance than some Scapania species. In my experience, gemmae are not common here.

It is an abundant liverwort of shaded, damp drystone wall communites, old limestone quarries and among rocks and tree roots on the woodland floor. It can also be found on rotting logs in woodland (as in the second photo).
